FAQs
You may have questions before starting therapy. Here are some of the most common ones. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, please do get in touch — I’m happy to talk things through.
-
Yes. I work online using a secure platform. To do this, you’ll need a private, comfortable space where you won’t be disturbed, and a setup that allows me to see you clearly. I also work in person — both in East Lothian (just south of Dunbar) and in central Edinburgh — and offer walking therapy outdoors in a mutually agreed location (weather permitting). Some people choose one way of working, while others combine them — whatever feels most comfortable and supportive for you.
-
You don’t need to be in crisis to start therapy. Many people come simply wanting space to reflect, understand themselves better, or make changes in their life. Our first conversation is an opportunity to explore this and see if working together feels like a good fit.
-
We’ll talk about what’s brought you to therapy and what you’d like to explore. You don’t need to have everything figured out — many people aren’t sure at first, and that’s absolutely fine. It’s just a chance to get to know each other and decide together how to move forward.
-
There’s no fixed answer — it depends on your situation and what you want to achieve. Some people work for a short period on a specific issue, while others explore something more gradually. We’ll review this together as we go. I also ask that we plan endings with at least two sessions’ notice so we can have a positive closure session. For many clients is a new and valuable experience.

Both aim to support your emotional wellbeing. Counselling often focuses on more immediate or current challenges, while psychotherapy can involve exploring deeper patterns and experiences, sometimes rooted in the past. My approach, using Transactional Analysis, can work in either way — short-term or long-term — depending on what feels most useful for you.

Walk and Talk can be a great option if you find eye contact uncomfortable or if you simply feel more relaxed when outdoors. Walking side by side often makes conversations feel more natural and less intense, and being in nature can bring an added sense of calm.
We wouldn’t start with Walk and Talk in your very first session — instead, we’d take time to decide together if it feels like the right approach for you. We would then choose a location that suits your needs, whether that means a gentle walk or sitting outside in a quiet spot.
Walk and Talk is always weather dependent, and if conditions aren’t suitable we’ll agree on an alternative (such as meeting online or indoors). You’ll need to dress for the weather and wear suitable footwear, but sessions will always move at your pace — it’s not about distance or fitness.
While we’ll choose quieter routes, it’s worth noting that complete privacy can’t always be guaranteed outdoors. I’ll check in with you regularly so you feel comfortable with how we manage this.
-
Individual sessions cost £75. I also offer a limited number of concessionary places — please ask if this would help.
Payment is required in advance to reserve your session, and can be made by cash or bank transfer. Fees are reviewed annually.
-
I don’t have a fixed “low-cost fee” or a sliding scale. Instead, if cost is a concern, we’ll have an open and honest conversation about what feels affordable for you. I’ll take your lead in setting a fee that works, and if committing to the same amount each week feels difficult, we can explore flexible options together.
-
Each session lasts 60 minutes.
-
You can cancel without charge if you give at least 48 hours’ notice. Otherwise, the full session fee is payable. I appreciate as much notice as possible if you know you cannot attend, and I will do the same if a session needs to be rescheduled.

Yes. As a member of the BACP and UKATA, I follow strict codes of ethics. Confidentiality is fundamental, with exceptions only when necessary (extreme cases, legal or ethical implication. I will always try to discuss any potential breach with you first. Additionally, I engage in regular clinical supervision for all client work, and anything shared with my supervisor remains confidential.
